Sleep disorders in children and adolescents are common. Getting enough sleep is essential for a child’s growth and development. Chronically disrupted sleep in infants, children, and adolescents can lead to problems in cognitive functioning, such as attention, learning, and memory. Studies have shown that poor sleep quality and/or quantity in children are associated with a host of problems, including academic, behavioral, developmental and social difficulties, weight abnormalities, and other health problems. At Golden Gate Sleep Centers, Dr. Puja Thakkar offers numerous diagnostic and treatment options at her two locations in Danville and Fremont, California, helping children get much-needed sleep. If you’re interested in how one of these methods can help, call or use the online scheduling tool to request an appointment.

Pediatric Sleep Disorders

How do pediatric sleep disorders impact children and adolescents?

Sleep disorders in children and adolescents can seriously affect their health and development, learning and academic achievement, behavior, and their overall well-being. Not only do pediatric sleep problems affect child health, but they can impact family life.

Pediatric sleep disorders can complicate other medical conditions such as epilepsy, autism, asthma, obesity, and psychological problems, such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

What are the most common pediatric sleep disorders?

The types of sleep disorders typically seen are snoring, sleep apnea, nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting), insomnia (the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep), nightmares, restless legs syndrome, sleep walking and talking, and night terrors.  Sleep disorders can be easily evaluated by sleep testing (sleep study or polysomnography). This is a non-invasive test that can be done at our facilities overnight.

Making sure a child gets a good night’s sleep is a major concern for many parents. Dr. Thakkar’s goal is to find the best solutions for your child’s sleep issues, monitor progress, and develop a treatment plan that works for the entire family.
