Remote Patient Monitoring For Sleep Apnea
Golden Gate Sleep Centers
Internists & Sleep Medicine Specialists located in San Ramon, CA & Fremont, CA
Sleep apnea therapy works best when someone has your back. If you've been prescribed a PAP device, Golden Gate Sleep Centers now offers a Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) program that lets our physicians stay connected with your therapy between visits — so problems don't have to wait for your next appointment. Insurance benefits and health benefits both depend on consistent use, and RPM is designed to help you stay consistent.
Remote Patient Monitoring
What is Remote Patient Monitoring?
Remote Patient Monitoring — RPM for short — is a way for your care team to check in on your PAP therapy without you having to come into the office. Modern CPAP, BiPAP, and ASV machines already record useful information each night — how long you used the device, how well your mask fit, how the pressure felt to you. RPM lets us look at that information through a secure portal so we can catch small issues before they turn into big ones, and help your therapy actually work the way it should.
The goal of RPM
The first 90 days of PAP therapy are the initial focus for most insurance coverage — but staying on therapy long-term is what actually delivers the health benefits: better sleep, more daytime energy, and reduced strain on your heart and overall health. The goal of our RPM program is to help you stay on track well beyond that first 90 days, so your therapy keeps working for you month after month, year after year. Sticking with PAP therapy is what leads to better health — and RPM is here to help you do exactly that.
How does RPM work?
Your PAP machine has a small SIM card built into it, similar to the one in a cell phone. After each night's use, it sends your therapy information to the company that made your device (such as ResMed, Philips, React Health, or Fisher & Paykel). Our team reviews that information through a secure online portal and reaches out if we see something worth discussing — a mask that's starting to leak, a night or two you didn't use the device, a pressure setting that could be more comfortable.
A quick note on privacy: we only see the therapy information your device reports — nothing else from your home. You don't need Wi-Fi, and nothing new needs to be set up.
What are the benefits of RPM?
RPM helps you stay on track with your therapy without extra office visits. The benefits include:
- Support with your therapy without needing to come in every time a question comes up
- Faster fixes when your mask, machine, or comfort starts giving you trouble
- Help meeting your insurance's usage requirements so your PAP machine and supplies stay covered
- A care team reviewing your data for issues so you don't have to figure them out on your own
- The reassurance of knowing your care team is there for you between visits
Who is eligible for RPM?
RPM is available to any Golden Gate Sleep Centers patient using a PAP device (CPAP, BiPAP, or ASV) for sleep apnea. It's especially helpful if you're just starting therapy, still in your first 90 days on the device, or have recently switched masks or had a pressure change — but every PAP patient can benefit, no matter how long you've been on therapy.
Is RPM covered by insurance?
Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover Remote Patient Monitoring. Depending on your plan, you may have a small co-pay or deductible, just like with a regular office visit — and many patients pay nothing at all. Our billing team is happy to answer questions about your specific coverage.
Is my information private?
Yes. The information collected through your PAP device is protected health information under HIPAA, handled the same way as everything else in your medical record. It's shared only with parties directly involved in your care — including the company that made your device and our monitoring software provider — and each of them is bound by formal agreements to protect your information. The monitoring software we use is a registered FDA Class I medical device. We do not sell your data or use it for marketing.
How do I enroll?
Enrolling is simple. Talk to your provider at your next visit, or give the office a call. You'll sign a short consent form, and our RPM team takes it from there. If you're new to PAPtherapy, expect a 2–4 week wait between enrollment and active monitoring — that's the time it takes for your equipment company to process the order, ship your device, and for your first nights of data to start coming in.
Enrollment is completely voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time with a written request to our office

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Remote Patient Monitoring cost extra?
Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover RPM. Depending on your plan, you may have a small co-pay or deductible — the same as with a regular office visit. Many patients pay nothing out of pocket. Our billing team can help answer questions about your specific coverage.
Do I have to buy any new equipment?
No. Your existing PAP machine already has everything needed to participate. If your device is more than a few years old and doesn't have wireless capability, our team can talk with you about your options.
How often will you contact me?
Only when there's something worth discussing. Many patients hear from us just a few times a year — usually when we see something in your data that we can help with, like a mask that's starting to leak or a change in your usage pattern. If everything is going well, you may not hear from us at all in a given month.
Does RPM really help me stay on therapy?
Yes — that's the whole point. The first several months of PAP therapy are the hardest, and many people give up when small problems build up without help. Having a care team review your therapy information and step in when something needs attention makes a real difference in whether therapy sticks. RPM is about giving you that support so you're not doing it alone.
Can I stop the program at any time?
Yes. Enrollment is completely voluntary, and you can withdraw from the program at any time with a written request to our office. Your decision won't affect any other care you receive from Golden Gate Sleep Centers.
Is my data secure?
Yes. Information collected through your PAP device is protected health information under HIPAA and is handled the same way as everything else in your medical record. It's shared only with parties involved in your care, under formal agreements to protect your information. We do not sell your data or use it for marketing.
Will RPM replace my regular office visits?
No — RPM works alongside your regular care, not in place of it. Some patients find they need fewer office visits because we can handle smaller issues remotely, but you'll still 5see your provider in person for annual check-ins, evaluations, and any big changes to your therapy.
I'm new to CPAP. When does monitoring start?
There is typically a 2–4 week wait between enrollment and active monitoring for new PAP patients. This gives your DME provider time to process your equipment order, ship your device, and have you begin therapy — once your device is set up and sending data, our team starts reviewing it.
